We have published this statement to share our current position at this time of the COVID-19 outbreak and to help you to understand what you are required to do given that the The Health and Safety at Work Act still applies in the current situation. It is to be noted that Employers or those in control of premises must continue to manage any risk arising from their activity/ none-activity including legionella control. Dutyholders must still be able to demonstrate control of risk of legionella during these challenging times.
Whilst we appreciate that the controls in place may need to be adapted due to the changing circumstances, this notice is also to confirm that we are operating as normal and will continue to support all our clients at this time as per your pre-existing water compliance contract/s.
Following the publication of confirmed ‘Key Workers’ by the Government on 19th March 2020^ and along with the confirmation from the HSE and Legionella Control Association, H2O Hygiene fall under the Utilities Water Sector ‘Key Worker’ band, which enables us to support clients with their “legal requirement to manage legionella risk^^.” It is with this confirmation that we want to assure you that the COVID-19 outbreak will not terminate/ pause your water compliance contract/s.
We want to reassure you that as a business, our priority will always be the Health & Safety of all our clients, staff and our clients’ customers and residents by enforcing the requirements of HSE legislation for Legionella Control^^^.
What happens now?
- Works that are already scheduled will continue as normal with all members of staff following the Government’s & NHS guidance of how to avoid and spread the Coronavirus (Article: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/)
- Following the submission of this notice, we will assume, unless otherwise notified with a minimum of 24 hours before the attendance date, that you authorise access to your site as normal in order to maintain your legionella control.
- Further support can be provided if required – in addition to your current compliance contract, we are able to offer further services^^^^, which may currently be outside of our contractual duties, such as flushing of little used outlets, temperature monitoring and any other legionella control procedures, with the aim of supporting our clients in the event that your onsite compliance and maintenance teams may be sent into isolation. We can also ensure ongoing control including safe shutdown of water systems if a building is to be closed until further notice, followed by assistance with reinstating services including system chlorinations.

IMPORTANCE OF LEGIONELLA CONTROL
Whilst we are understanding of the challenging and uncertain times we are in as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we must remind you of the importance of maintaining a robust legionella control programme, especially given the fact that both Coronavirus and Legionnaires Disease symptoms can trigger severe respiratory problems, particularly with the elderly and persons with weakened immune systems.
